A Christmas Carol

Curtain Call Theatre - San Leandro, CA

Reviewed By = Mauricio Segura

Curtain Call Performing Arts has done an outstanding job with this production. Sets and backdrops designed by David Biettle are amazing, and enhanced with lighting and smog effects; its equivalent to what you would expect at a major Broadway-style venue. Equally exceptional are costume designer Andrea Gorham's outfits. It's a difficult feat to design costumes for a large cast, but to design costumes for a production that spans a time frame of 60+ years... it boggles the mind; Andrea pulled it off with flying colors.

As a musical, good sound is a key component. Sound was a bit inconsistent which detracted from a great performance. Hopefully these problems will be corrected in subsequent productions since all else worked so well. What won't disappoint or distract is the acting and most importantly, the vocals. Beginning with Scrooge, played by John Cotrufo, the character is brought to life as one would expect. He is ably presented as a loud, grouchy, age-weary man with heavy gestures and empowering presence. Cotrufo's performance is quite entertaining and it's evident he truly enjoys playing the lead part.

Other notables include Nik Dmoski, who as the ghost of Christmas Present is a joy to watch. He's funny, has a great voice, but it's his stage presence that elevates his performance to a top slot. Tiny Tim, played by Emily Joy Kessel was a sweet surprise. A flawless voice with amazing pitch made Tiny Tim's character come to life. The entire cast was top notch talent, but at the apex, Catherine Williamson's voice of Christmas Past, is a superb. Beautiful, angelic, haunting, amazing, are all fitting words, but still slightly less descriptive of what her voice deserves. Her vibrancy and enchanting smile are an absolute delight; Miss Williamson is bound for Broadway stardom.

Overall, A Christmas Carol provides a great evening of theater for the entire family. Older guests will relive childhood, while younger ones will create lasting memories. The Christmas spirit is alive and well at San Leandro's Arts Education Center. Make this holiday season even more special by spending an evening watching this wonderful performance. Happy Holidays!

My Way

Dean Lesher Center - Walnut Creek, CA

     A Truly Delightful Show!

As a lifetime fan of the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra, and who has seen him in person, I have to say My Way, currently showing at Lesher Center for the Arts, in downtown Walnut Creek, is a very good show.

Documenting Frank’s career through his music, a cast of twelve singers and dancers, headed by Carlos Lpez, Jessica Fisher, Michael Kern Cassidy and Chloe Condon, entertain you for two full hours with this musical tribute that will make you tap your feet with some of Sinatra’s best songs.

From the days of the Paramount Theater in New York City in 1942, to his very last days touring all around the world, and his death on May 14, 1998, Frank Sinatra recorded 1,300 songs establishing one of the greatest careers of any crooner in American history.

This musical is not an impersonation of Sinatra, but rather a close look into his fascinanting life, done with the glitter and style of one unique entertainer, whose career in recording, television and movies is unmatched to this day. All done with the great sound of a three-piece combo, under the direction of César Cancino at the Piano, Michael Shiono at Bass and Randy Hood at the Drums. And under the directiong and choreography of Derrick J. Silva.

If you are a Frank Sinatra fan, this is a must see, but also if you are a Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. (The Rat Pack), you will be pleased with this bonanza of good music. Songs like Strangers in the Night to New York, New York, from That’s Life”, to Nice ‘n Easy, Fly Me to the Moon, to One for my Baby, the mother of all torch songs.

A total of 56 Frank Sinatra hits are in this musical extravaganza, with a 15 minute intermission. It ends September 29. The Lesher Center for the Arts is centrally located, easy to find from all points in the Bay Area. By BART is no more than a 15 minute walk from the Walnut Creek station. If you drive, there is a parking garage next door, $5.00.

I liked it so much, I might go again before it ends, if you like live music, great ambiance inside a great facility, it is worthwhile the trip from San Francisco,San José,Fremont of Richmond, and if you live in Walnut Creek, you are very lucky.

AIDA

Stage 1 Theatre - Newark, CA

Reviewed By = Mauricio Segura

To kick off their 2012 season, Stage 1 Theatre Company is currently producing AIDA. Written by the same musical collaborators who brought the "Lion King" to life, Elton John and Tim Rice, AIDA is a timeless story of true forbidden love found within the turmoils of war in ancient Egypt.

As far as musicals go, you can't get any better than this "music-wise". On one hand you have the genius lyrics of Tim Rice, who has also penned unforgettable musicals such as Joseph and the Amazing technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, and Beauty and the Beast, to name a few. Then you have Elton John, the phenomenal pianist who has  constantly brought chart topping hits to radio's worldwide for the past five decades.

Not to take anything from Rice, but the music truly carries this production, because unfortunately, the storyline is rather weak on its own. It's at times predictable, at other times a little rushed, and then it leaves circumstances open for questioning. However, there are a few twist and turns thrown in that will make up for what it lacks, and with the great music, it's still very much entertaining.

The sets are simple, yet adequate. They're neither too elaborate nor too plain to distract the audience. The lighting effects work very well in setting the mood for each scene, and the sound is well balanced. Tie it all together with the superb orchestra, lead by Ken Nadler, and you have a winning behind the scenes combination.

As for the actual performance itself. You won't hear any sub par singing in this show. I was quite impressed with all of the vocal talent. But of coarse, there is one shining star. Matty Gregg, who plays Radames (the soon to be husband of Pharaoh's only daughter who falls in love with the one person his country forbids), steals the show. His stage presence, vocal abilities, and overall persona command the audiences attention. Even more impressive is the fact that Matty was a last minute replacement for the original lead. In just 12 days, he learned all of his lines, choreography, prompts, etc. That fact alone deserves a standing ovation.

Ernestine Balisi, who plays the Numbian Princess AIDA, almost blew me out my seat when she first began singing. She has a beautiful and powerful voice. A true talent!

Honorable mention to Andrew Taula on his portrayal of Radames' servant Mereb. His voice is smooth, his acting is flawless, he was a treat to watch. Honorable mention also goes to Paul Plain who plays Radames shady father Zoser, and Bruce Knopf for a very convincing Pharaoh.

Lastly, Christi Wallace. A superb voice, a rock and roll voice with Broadway flair. She was great at dishing out the comedy, and equally as great bringing the tone down to dramatic levels. Kudos to Christi!

There was one thing about this production which threw me off and caused me to deduct major points from my overall review. It was with the dance ensemble. Not the entire group, but about 4 of the females. In each dance scene, these same four women seemed as if they were just going through the motions. There was no feeling in what they were doing unlike the others. Not only that, but they're facial expressions didn't change. Whether the scene called for sadness, laughter, or fear, they kept the same deer caught in headlights look. It became very distracting, and I bring it up knowing that I wasn't the only one who noticed. I hope this will be addressed and corrected for future performances.

Overall, AIDA will make a great night out at the theater. Its currently paying through July 28th, so you only have a handful of performances to choose from. Set a date, and enjoy a great evening over at Stage 1! Cheers!

Fiddler on the Roof

Woodminster Theatre - Oakland, CA

Reviewed By = Mauricio Segura

Before I comment on the show, I have talk a little about the venue itself. It was my first time visiting as well, and I was extremely impressed with the place.

Woodminster is up in the Oakland hills behind the Mormon Temple in the Joaquin Miller Park. The theater dates back to the WW2 years (perhaps even before), and although the seats have probably been replaced a few times since then, they're not the most comfortable. Also, you'll be outdoors, and that obviously means, exposure to the elements. In other words, its advisable to bring something soft to sit on, and dress accordingly. There, those are the only drawbacks, if you could even call them drawbacks.

The setting itself is breathtaking. Above and behind the stage is a view that you have to just see to believe of the bay, with a cascade running down the hill beneath you. The park is full of trails and picnic grounds for you to have a full fledged picnic before the show. But make sure to save some of the food, because they let you bring it into the theater to enjoy during the performance. Where else can you do that? Oh, and then there's another thing they do that I have yet to see at any other theater, all kids, 16 and under (each child must be accompanied by a paying adult), get to enjoy the show for free!

As I sit here going over the evening in my mind, I find I have a dilemma. Let me explain. The hardest reviews to write, are the one's that are either complete bombs or complete masterpieces. Because either way, it's so good or so bad, that you're not going to have much to pinpoint. It's so much easier when you have a half bad show with highlights, or a great show with drawbacks, because you can grab on to things that stand out and expand on them. Extremes make for short reviews, and I for one, am not into writing a short review. But in this case, I don't have much of a choice.

Woodminster's production of Fiddler on the Roof is one of this years theatrical masterpieces. I very rarely give a 5 Golden Bridge review for the reason I just stated in the previous paragraph. If I was to pick any negatives from the evening it would be the semi-uncomfortable seats, the cold air, the seven year old in Giants gear giving me a hard time over my A's cap (can't we all just get along?), and a few instances with the actors mic's turning off. But none of that had anything to do with the actual performance, which was absolutely wonderful.

Beginning with the sets, at first I found them quite vague. The painted backdrop of rolling hills and trees were fine, but the unsymmetrical homes threw me off a bit. However, once the show began and I saw how the homes were converted to indoor settings, I realized the ingenuity in it, and suddenly, in my mind, it all worked.

From the kids to the adults, all of the actors were at the top of their game. Their voices were superb! When you can actually feel the emotions being portrayed in a scene (Sunrise, Sunset / Chavaleh / Anatevka) you know the actors have a special gift. And this cast definitely has it! They compliment each other, as did the three sisters during “Matchmaker, Matchmaker”, or the entire cast in the marriage scene, and of coarse the funniest part of the performance, Tevye's Dream!

Speaking of Tevye, I've seen four different stage versions of FOTR in my reviewing career, including one major Broadway production starring Harvey Fierstein. But Bruce Winant who plays Tevye in this production completely blows them all out of the water. In fact, I will go on record stating that he is practically on par with Topal himself, who is the actor who portrayed Tevye in the 1971 Academy Award winning film adaption. Winant is flawless, his voice impeccable, his stage presence is undeniable, and I would say plenty more if I had my thesaurus handy and opened to the word, incredible!

Of coarse, no musical can be a success without a good orchestra backing it up. And conductor Richard Vetterli lead his team of musicians to pure perfection. I also can't leave out all of the people behind the scenes who helped to put all of this together. A true gem!

Its a shame that this is only playing two weekends, but you still have this coming weekend to catch this wonderful show. So get a nice picnic together, head out to the park for the day, and finish the evening with Fiddler on the Roof! Trust me, you'll thank me for it!

Performing Arts Review - Disney on Ice / Toy Story 3

Performing Arts Review

Disney on Ice / Toy Story 3

Oracle Arena - Oakland, CA

Reviewed By = Mauricio Segura

Whenever I sit down to review a Disney on Ice show, or any show for that matter geared towards children, I have to laugh. The reason is the kids don't read reviews. If they want to see a show, they're just gonna ask mommy or daddy to take them. If I, or a fellow writer give a lousy review, kids won't care! They'll still beg the parents and show up in droves. So, Here's my review for you grownups despite it not making any bit of difference.

The good news is this. The show is actually good and quite entertaining. Like all DOI shows, the audience is greeted by Mickey and the gang who introduce the story and main characters. The first half is then a mix of themes from Toy Story 1 and 2, complete with parachuting plastic army men and all your favorite Toy Story characters from the three eyed aliens to Woody and Buzz. Great dance themes like the Throwdown Showdown will have the kids out of their seats and the adults tapping their feet.

The second half of the show retells the 3rd installment of series where the toy's owner, Andy, is heading off to college. The toys get donated to a local nursery that turns out to be far from what they expect and it takes Woody, with help from Barbie, to be the hero and break them all out. Fun times ensue in between entertaining song and dance numbers, with one (the Barbie dance off) which will get the guys in audience to pay a little more attention.

Overall, you'll find this show will provide you with a good time. The only thing it lacked was the special effects other shows in the past have displayed. The theatrics and choreography wasn't quite on par either. However, if you've never seen a past edition of DOI, disregard what I just said. You'll have a great time!

Interview - Matthew Kershaw

Interview

Matthew Kershaw

Disney on Ice Performer

Interviewed By = Mauricio Segura

Growing up on the Isle of Wight in England, Matthew Kershaw was not a typical grade-schooler.  Starting when he was 6 years old, Matthew woke every morning before dawn, traveled to the mainland to skate, and came back to his small island in time for school.  His hard work paid off; he won his first medal at age 7, and went on to place 5th in the 2005 British Primary Championships and 3rd in the 2007 IJS Junior Qualifier, before landing a spot in Disney on Ice presents Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 in 2011.

A member of the United Kingdom’s National Ice Skating Association, Matthew enjoys traveling with Disney on Ice.  “I love being able to bring entertainment to other people,” he says, adding that he wants audiences to feel they get the most value possible from his performances.

Matthew hopes to tour with Disney on Ice as long as he can, and his ultimate goal is to land a principal role in a Disney on Ice show.  When he someday returns to England, he would like to finish his coaching qualifications and help young skaters achieve their dreams.  His advice for kids who want to become ice skaters is simple.  He says, “If you want it, go get it!”

Matthew was nice enough to take a few minutes to speak with us. Check out what he said...

GBM - When and how did you first realize you wanted to become a professional ice skater?
Matthew - Well, Ive been skating since I was 6 years old, and my parents had always taken me to shows in England. It looked like an amazing experience and I always wanted to do it. I've always enjoyed performing and I new it would be something I would end up doing eventually.

GBM - Great! Now, taking young skaters into account who might wanna follow in your footsteps, how does one get a spot in Disney on Ice. Can you tell me a little about your journey?
Matthew - Certainly! I was competing at a senior level in Briston up until 2010. That was the extent of my skating. I had some friends who were skating for Disney and they gave me the contacts where I had to send a video of my skating skills and tricks. I sent it off and they called me for an audition which was held at Wembley in England.

GBM - Oh wow, Wembley? Talk about intimidating!
Matthew - Ya right? Ha ha! So ya, I nailed the audition, and the rest as you can say is history I guess.

GBM - Exiting process.
Matthew - Yes!

GBM - What would you say is the most enjoyable aspect of being a part of Disney on Ice?
Matthew - Oh, that's tough. There are a lot of aspects. Like being from Merry Old England, I've seen amazing places in California, Florida... But, its definitely gotta be when I'm on the ice, and I see the kids going wild, you know, they're loving it? We have a part in the show called, Throwdown Showdown, from Hannah Montana but with Woody's roundup gang. All the kids get up and start dancing, and it's a wonderful thing to see from the ice.

GBM - I bet! It pumps you guys up at the same time.
Matthew - Exactly, ya. Its the longest part of the show at about 9 minutes, and 6 minutes into the show. So at that point, we're all like, ya c'mon let's party. And we know it's just going to be a wild experience.

GBM - The wilder the better. What character(s) do you play?
Matthew - I'm part of the ensemble. I'm one of the dancers in the Throwdown Showdown, I'm also in the beginning when all the main characters are getting introduced. Everyone loves that bit. Then I'm on again in the finale.

GBM - What goes into putting this show on? How long did you have to rehearse and get down the choreography before stepping into the ice in front of a live audience?
Matthew -We started in Mexico in August. This is the second year of the tour, but my first. We had, I think, five days to learn the entire show.
GBM - Five Days?
Matthew - Ya, nutts, I know. After that, we flew in at night and spent the next three days on ice practicing before finally stepping out in front of the audience. It was very hard, very demanding. But quite rewarding once it was done live.

GBM - And you make it look so easy, Who would've known!
Mathew - Laughs

GBM - What about travel. You're practically in a new city every week. Do you get to sight-see, or is it merely work and no play?
Matthew - Well ya, the majority of time we do. I mean, we got into San Jose at half past ten on Monday. So yesterday we had the day to relax. We won't have too much time away while were here, but hopefully when we get to Florida, we'll have more time to relax and enjoy the area.

GBM - Florida is nice. Any word on moving on to Europe?
Matthew - I'm not quite sure at the moment. It hasn't been determined, but I would love to go to Europe and especially back home in England.

GBM - Right, nothing better than performing for the friends and family.
Matthew - Ya, you got it.

GBM - Do you miss being away from home?
Matthew - Well ya! These days its easier, especially with performing. But like the holidays, Christmas was pretty hard. But at the same time, all of us here are like one big family. We look out for each other and that's good.

GBM - Well said. Back to the show itself, I've often heard it said that if you've seen one Disney on Ice show, you've seen them all. What would you tell those people to convince them to go see Toy Story 3?
Matthew - Yes, well the Toy Story movies are quite popular as it is. In the first half of our show, we have a mashup of Toy Story 1 and 2. But in the second half it just Toy Story 3, where we introduce new characters only seen in that 3rd film. So we incorporate things from all three movies and its fun to watch the reproduced live on ice. They'll see things that will make them say, Oh yes, I remember that part. The younger parents might have grown up with the first two, so their still fans. But its totally different seeing live and its a great experience.

GBM - Great. I'll wrap it up with this. Personally, what are your plans after Disney On Ice?
Matthew - I'd like to get as much experience in this and see where it takes me. I would love to someday coach. Id love to pass on my experiences and professionalism forward. Maybe even tour some more as much as I can.

GBM - Well I wish you the best. It's been fun talking to you and I thank you for taking the time to sit down and share a little of this cool ride your on.
Matthew - Ha ha! Thank you, it was fun!

Hairspray

Stage 1 Theatre - Newark, CA

Reviewed By = Mauricio Segura

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! Is about all I can say about Stage 1's theater production of Hairspray. I review approximately 30-40 community theater shows each year, and have done so for 8 years. I've seen a lot of great shows, I've seen a lot of flops, but it's rare to see a show that truly blows me away. The five Golden Bridge rating I'm giving to Hairspray I have only given to 6 other productions.

Set in 1962 Baltimore, “Hairspray” follows the life of a typical lovesick teenager, Tracy Turnblad. The highlight of her and her friend Penny Pingleton's lives is rushing home from school to watch the hit Corny Collins Dance Show. A spot soon opens up in the cast which she auditions for and wins. Once there however, she's introduced to the true colors of 60's segregation and sets a plan into motion to change the system and unite communities one side step and shimmy at a time.

This show had me tapping my feet from beginning to end, and I was truly disappointed when it finally ended. The set design, costumes, and lighting was spot on. And the orchestra with extended pit singers were simply flawless. Kudos to musical director/conductor Blair Barret and each talented musician. Major props also goes to choreographer Kevin Hammond and his team. What they pulled off merits a standing ovation from the folks down at Glee!

Of coarse, none of this would work if it wasn't for the cast. And while I wish I could single out each one since everyone on stage shined, I'll have to stick with some of the main characters for review length purposes. Jennifer Gregoire (Tracy Turnblad), was likable in every way. Great singing, great dancing, great acting, and great persona. Her portrayal of Tracy was in some ways even better than Nikki Blonky's portrayal in the movie. Dave Sikula (Edna Turnblad) was hilarious throughout. His/her duet with Charles Evans (Wilbur Turnblad), “Timeless to Me”, was a classic and a highlight of the evening. Rachel L. Jacobs' one-liners and gum chewing made Penny Pingleton one of the cutest ditsy nerds on any stage. Lastly, but by far not least, Sherrell-Lee Rogers (Motormouth Maybelle) and Lavale-William Davis (Seaweed Stubbs) supplied the soul food feast, while Luke Chapman (Link Larkin), Josh Milbourne (Corny Collins), and the rest brought it on home.

Hairspray in Newark is a definite Must-See! Absolutely the best live production I've seen in over a year. It will only be playing for two more weekends, so go on down there and enjoy a great night of live theater. Trust me, you'll be dancing in the aisles!

Crimes of the Heart

Broadway West - Fremont, CA

Reviewed By = Mauricio Segura

Crimes of the Heart can be considered a dark tragic comedy. Equally balanced, it's as disturbing as it is funny with a touch of heartwarming nuance.

Set in 1974 Mississippi, this twang-filled play covers a 24 hour period in the hard luck lives of the MaGrath sisters. All three were raised in a dysfunctional family and now, as adults, are dealing with hardship and misery. One sister, Babe, is fresh out of jail for shooting her husband in the stomach and now awaits trial. Ironically, one of the best defense lawyers in town is her ailing husband. Meg ran off to Hollywood with hopes and dreams to become a star but the spotlight just didn't shine in her direction; she returns home from a fresh stint in the loony bin. And finally Lenny, just 30, already feels washed up. With no friends, aside from her louder than average cousin, Chick, and a life not fully lived, she has practically given up on any chance of true happiness.

The sisters reunite when their grandfather's stroke leaves him in a coma at the local hospital. During the ordeal, they are forced to face inner personal demons, taking one to the brink of suicide and the others to the edge of their own sanity. The three collaborate in an attempt to put out the fires of their personal and collective miseries.

One might wonder, "Where does the comedy fit into all of this?" Strangely, it just does. The genius of this play is that it is highly entertaining and funny yet doesn't take anything away from the seriousness of the situation.

All of the actors are exceptional, allowing the audience to relate to each character and understand them. Dawn Cates (Lenny) does a splendid job drawing the audience into her emotion-filled character. You truly feel for her and wish things turn out for the best. Monica Colleti's Meg is powerful; Meg sees herself, a star. Ariel Aronica (Babe) is a delight to watch. Aside from the cutest smile which lights up the theater, she plays her character with a likeable charm. You know she just shot her husband, but you're willing to forgive. Ariel also pulled off the only true act of physical comedy opposite the kitchen stove. I won't reveal the scene, but two words came to mind in this highlight of the evening... "Ouch" and "Bravo"!

Aside from the sisters, Mandy Armes who plays Chick, is quite the scene stealer. From the beginning, her one-liners and uppity attitude make Chick a funny addition. Phillip Raupach (Barnette) is systematic in the way he delivers his lines - not a bad thing. It was very easy to follow his dialog, and considering he plays a lawyer, it made sense. Finally, Rick Fish as Doc Porter might be easy to forget with only two short appearances in the entire play, but Rick brought so much life into Doc that he completely owned his scenes.

Overall, Crimes of the Heart is a kaleidoscope of emotions. It took a few minutes for me to truly get into it, but once dialed in, I couldn't tune out. It was funny, horrendous, and sad, but a true hit for as evening at the theater.
